Addiction and mental health conditions u2014 like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder u2014 frequently occur together. Sometimes substance use begins as a way of coping with untreated mental health symptoms; other times, ongoing substance use contributes to or worsens mental health struggles. Either way, treating one in isolation often leaves the other unaddressed, which makes lasting recovery harder.

This is why ‘co-occurring disorder’ or ‘dual diagnosis’ care exists: treatment that addresses substance use and mental health together, rather than as two separate problems. This might mean therapy that targets both, coordinated psychiatric and addiction specialists, or a facility structured around integrated care from the start.

If you’re not sure whether what you’re dealing with is ‘just’ a mental health issue or ‘just’ a substance use issue, that uncertainty is common u2014 and it’s exactly the kind of question a proper assessment is designed to answer. We can help connect you with providers who assess for both.
